Typically slow off the line, the St. Basil Saints hit high hear early Friday night, opening the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association AA senior girls basketball tournament with a 56-36 win over Sudbury's College-Notre Dame Alouettes. Abby Hurd scored nine of her 14 points in the first quarter of play to help the Sault Ste. Marie city champions take a 21-5 lead by the end of the frame. Samantha Hunt scored 15 and Kristine Dovigi eight for the Saints, who were up 21-11 by halftime.

The pep rally is supposed to pump up the team before the big game. But after an up and down season and rumors about head coach Charlie Weis' future, some of the fans say they needed a bit of inspiration, too. Pep rallies are full of excitement with the band and cheers and high hopes for the coming game.  

Former Notre Dame athletic director Anthony Creece, charged with supplying alcohol to minors, has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. The case will be sent to Monroe County court. Creece was fired after he was charged with supplying six girls with alcohol at a sleepover in the gym of the high school, on Aug. 29.

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs is sidelined indefinitely after getting kneecapped by Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn on Monday night. My take: I haven't confirmed this with Notre Dame assistant head coach Corwin Brown, but I'm pretty sure Quinn didn't learn to play that way at South Bend. Notre Dame volleyball coach Debbie Brown was chosen as the Big East Coach of the Year Thursday night. Brown led the Irish to the league title with a 14-0 record. For Brown, it was her sixth such honor and first since 2005.  

A late-night weekend bus route will begin running between downtown and the University of Notre Dame in a couple of weeks. The university's student government pushed for the new Transpo route to provide a safe, efficient way for students to travel between campus, downtown and the northeast neighborhood, student body president Grant Schmidt said. "A lot of people try to walk home (from downtown), which is not always a safe decision," Schmidt said.

Notre Dame's extra-session luck finally ran out in Friday's Class 2 boys soccer state semifinal. It took an acrobatic play by Bolivar's standout to smash the Bulldogs' chances for more overtime magic. Bolivar's Matt Magana rocketed a throw-in using a flip to hit teammate Bradley Stillwagen, who headed home the game-winner with 2 minutes, 24 seconds left in the first overtime session.
